CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Grant came in, pushing a large, horizontal glass case with wheels. âYou said you wanted to see a side of me people donât see.â He opened the case.
Swords of various shapes and sizes hung from hooks.
âI collect swords.â He beamed. âItâs a secret obsession.â
âSwords?â
âIâve been into them since I was a kid, and Iâve been fencing since I was twelve.â He ran his hands across the gold and silver handles. âYou like them?â
âUhââ
âI have Viking swords and Celtic swords.â He pointed to a regal-looking one. âThis is a European Saber.â
Swords? This is too much.
âWhat do you do with them? Just look at them?â
âNo, I like to play with them.â
âPlay?â
âEver used a sword, Alexis?â
âHell no.â
âItâs fun.â He retrieved two sharp-pointed swords with basket hilts for handles. âThese are rapier swords. Can do a lot of damage in the wrong hands. You curious?â
âYou should keep them in the cabinet so no one gets hurt.â
âIâm a pro, and I can teach you to be one too.â He turned one around where the handle faced her and tossed it at her.
âAh.â She jumped as it fell to her feet. âGrant.â She gasped.
âPick it up.â He shoved the case across the room. âI said pick it up.â He pointed his sword at her with a stern expression.
Sweat trickled down her nose.
âYouâre sweating.â He got in position as if ready to joust. âPick it up.â
âWhat is this?â
âDonât be afraid. Iâm trying to teach you how to use a sword.â
âI donât want toââ
âPick it up.â He lunged at her.
She yanked up the sword, surprised at how light it was.
âThere you go.â
âGrant...â Her hands shook, the sword pointing downward.
âHow are you gonna do damage with it pointing down?â He hit hers with the tip of his. âGet it up.â He tapped it harder. âGet it up.â
She lifted it. âWhy are we doing this?â
An eerie look came into his eye. âBecause itâs fun.â He lunged at her. âIsnât this what you wanted?â
She screamed, waving the sword in an awkward manner.
âYou got to do better than that, Alexis.â He waved his like a master, holding his waist with his free hand. âThis is a battle, right? Youâve been challenging me.â
âI havenât.â She backed up, moving the sword toward him but only catching air. âI want to go home.â
âYou can go home.â He watched her as if she were a deer and he the hunter. âAfter weâre done here.â He thrust the sword at her and she blocked his movements. âGood! Thatâs good.â
âGrant, please.â
âPlease what?â
She backed into the wall.
âBetter get away from that wall before you get trapped.â He swung his blade toward her.
âOh!â Alexis ducked out the way. âStop it!â
âStop what? Huh?â He panted. âWhen I first asked you out, I said I wanted us to duel.â He plunged his sword at her.
âAh!â She whacked the point away with hers.
âThatâs good.â
She huffed and puffed. âWhen you said duel I didnât think you meant literally.â
He swayed the sword left and right.
Alexis shrieked, blocking his sword from penetrating. âOkay, I get it! I get the point.
